Hy-Vee bread is manufactured through a mix
of in-house baking, private-label partnerships, and
branded suppliers.
Key sources include their own, in-store Baking Stone
Bakery, private label brand Beaconsfield Bread Co.,
and major partner Bimbo Bakeries USA, which produces
brands like Sara Lee and Oroweat.
Baking Stone Bread: Artisan-style breads (sourdough,
focaccia) are handcrafted and baked fresh daily
within Hy-Vee store bakeries.
Beaconsfield Bread Co.: A private-label brand
featuring various breads, including 100% Whole
Wheat.
Bimbo Bakeries USA: Supplies various commercial
bread brands and white bread to Hy-Vee.
EQUII: A specialty, nutrient-enriched
complete-protein bread line added in 2024 to select
locations.
Farm To Market Bread Co.: A local supplier for
certain artisan breads.
In summary, for store-baked quality, Hy-Vee
manufactures it themselves under the Baking Stone
brand, while also stocking commercial brands from
Bimbo and specialized options like EQUII.
BREAD STORAGE:
For short-term (1-3 days) storage, keep bread at room
temperature in a paper bag, bread box, or its original
wrapper to balance moisture and prevent mold, with cut
sides facing down. For long-term storage, freeze bread
in an airtight container or bag to prevent staling.
Avoid refrigerating bread, as it accelerates staling.
Best for Crusty Bread: Store on the counter in a paper
bag or a bread box (or cut-side down on a board). This
allows air circulation, keeping the crust crisp while
the inside stays soft for a few days.
Best for Soft Bread/Sliced Bread: Store in a plastic bag
at room temperature to retain moisture and softness,
though this may lead to faster mold if not consumed
within 2-3 days.
Best for Long-Term: Slice the bread first and freeze it
in an airtight bag or container. Slices can be toasted
directly from frozen.
What to Avoid: Never store bread in the refrigerator.
The cold temperature speeds up the starch retrogradation
process, making the bread turn stale and hard much
faster.
How to Refresh Bread:
If bread has gone stale, you can revive it by spritzing
it with water and heating it in a 350°F oven for about
10 minutes, or by toasting it.
